Chocolate Cinnamon Bars
My Mom made these for Christmas every year. It was such a special treat that I never noticed just how simple and easy they are to make! Just goes to show you, it doesn't need to be fancy to be special. Thanks, Mom, for the recipe.
INGREDIENTS
2 cups sifted flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1 1/3 cups sugar (1 cup and then 1/3 cup for topping)
4 tsp. cinnamon (3 tsp. and then 1 for topping)
1 egg
1 egg, separated (save egg white)
¾ cup butter, softened
1 6 oz. (1 cup) pkg. chocolate chips (sometimes I use less)
1/2 cup chopped walnuts
DIRECTIONS
- Mix and sift flour, baking powder, 1 cup sugar and 3 tsp. cinnamon. Add
- margarine, 1 egg, and 1 egg yolk.
- Blend well with wooden spoon or on low speed of mixer. Turn into a lightly
- greased 13 x 9 pan and spread evenly
- with spatula. Beat egg white slightly and brush over mixture. Combine
- REMAINING 1/3 cup sugar, 1 tsp. cinnamon, chocolate pieces, and walnuts.
- Sprinkle this mixture over top.
- Bake in a moderate oven (350 degrees) for 25-30 minutes. 20 minutes for an 8 x 13 glass pan.
