Bloomin' Onion (Air Fryer)

The Bloomin’ Onion. Wow is it good, right? Well, here’s what you need to make one at home: PATIENCE! I made quite a few before I got the recipe just right in the air fryer. It’s delicious with its sauce! I highly recommend finding a good Youtube video on how to cut it if the directions aren’t easy to follow. I find that visual aids really help.

1 yellow onion
2 eggs + 1 Tbsp water, beaten to make an egg wash

For the seasoned flour:
1/3 cup cornstarch
1 cup flour
2 teaspoons garlic powder
2 teaspoons paprika
1 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons pepper

For the Seasoned Panko:
1 cup Panko
4 teaspoons paprika
2 teaspoons garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon pepper
1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper

For the Dipping Sauce:
1/2 cup mayonnaise
2 teaspoons ketchup
2 tablespoons horseradish (little less)
1/4 teaspoon paprika
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon garlic powder
1/8 teaspoon dried oregano
1 dash ground black pepper
1 dash cayenne pepper

DIRECTIONS

  • Combine all ingredients for the dipping sauce and mix well. Cover and place in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes before serving.

  • Combine and mix well. Mix cornstarch, flour, and seasonings until well blended.

  • Cut about 3/4" off top of onion and peel. Cut into onion 12 to 16 vertical wedges, but do not cut through the bottom root end. Remove about 1" of petals from the center of the onion. You may want to separate the onion petals slightly, but do not do this too much or you will destroy the onion.
Dip onion in egg wash and twirl to coat all the petals.

  • Set on a plate and make sure all the petals are sprawled out. Sprinkle seasoned flour; remove excess by shaking. Separate petals to coat thoroughly with flour.

  • Brush with egg wash again, making sure to get all the petals (this is where patience really helps)

  • Sprinkle Panko mixture over to coat all the petals thoroughly.

  • Set on a piece of aluminum foil and spritz generously with olive oil to coat.

  • Gently place in air fryer basket and air fry at 325 0 degrees for 15 minutes.

  • Open your air fryer and spritz with olive oil again, then place it back and air fry at 250 for 8-10 minutes.

  • Place onion upright in a shallow bowl and remove center core with circular cutter or apple corer. Serve hot with Creamy Chili Sauce.
